What You Need to Know About the Veeam Availability Suite Update 4 Release
David Hettrick | Market Development Manager
On January 22, 2019, Veeam announced the upcoming release of the Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4. This release has several new features and a licensing change to subscription-based products. Veeam Availability Suite 9.5 Update 4 was released on February 1, 2019.
There are a few things you should know about this release:
Microsoft solutions support
Veeam announced support for the latest release of Microsoft solutions, including support as guest OS. There is now support for installing Veeam components for:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2019
- Microsoft Windows Server Hyper-V 2019
- Microsoft SharePoint 2019
- Microsoft Exchange 2019
- Microsoft Active Directory 2019
Veeam products will continue to be sold in both perpetual and subscription licenses, but many of the new features (especially those for cloud) are available exclusively with the new instance subscription licensing. This adds a greater level of license portability.
- Licenses are portable across workload types VM/Physical/Cloud
- Sold in 10 packs of instance licenses
- Existing Microsoft/Linux agents will be automatically migrated to instance license upon upgrade to 9.5 U4
Veeam Cloud Tier
According to its website, the Veeam Cloud Tier “provides unlimited capacity for long-term data retention by using native, cost effective object storage integrations.”
Veeam explains that this solution allows you to:
“Leverage the lower cost, simplicity and elasticity of object storage including Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage, IBM Cloud Object Storage, as well as S3- compatible service providers and on-premises storage solutions.
Store data in the cloud without any double charges unlike with other backup providers who impose a ‘cloud tax’ on top of the cloud provider’s storage cost.
Avoid vendor lock-in associated with secondary storage appliances.”
Veeam Availability for Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Veeam Availability for AWS combines cloud-native backup, recovery and DR of AWS workloads with the ability to consolidate the backup data in a central Veeam repository. The solution mitigates the risk of losing access to your cloud applications and ensures protection of your AWS data against accidental deletion, data-level security threats and outages.
